Apologies for the lack of a post for today! One of our cases went before the First Circuit today, which leads into:
The First Circuit opens oral argument with a variation on the Supreme Court’s traditional “oyez” chant. Theirs:
All those having business before this, the Honorable, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, are admonished to draw near and give their attention, and they shall be heard.
For making a point about the way judicial review should work, the closing clause is especially powerful. It’s become popular to criticize judges for doing their job, but this is what’s on the line: any citizen’s right to seek redress for their grievances, even against the majority’s wishes.
