I have to disagree, again: the belief that people sue at the drop of a hat if procedural obstacles are removed oversimplifies the psychology of law, and assumes bad faith on the part of plaintiffs, while ignoring the potential for bad faith on the part of defendants in opposing the removal of procedural obstacles.

I have to say that I don't think of fetuses/embryos/etc. as parasites or diseases... not being mentally wanted, alone, does not a parasite make.

Steve,

A disorder in medical terms is when there is a disruption in the normal functioning of the body. Pregnancy is a natural consequence of sexual intercourse, not a disruption. That is the way a woman's body is designed. By your definition, if for some reason I "decided" that I didn't like the way my knee bent, I could call it a disorder and justify cutting it off. That, however, might get someone a visit with a psychiatrist. Sorry, no matter how you twist words, pregnancy is not a disease, regardless of how the woman feels. You cannot medically define terms based on feelings and wishes.

Sentient = able to perceive and feel things. Please don't tell me you think fetuses can't perceive or feel things?

Michael, as you said, disease is a disorder of structure or function. When a natural function of the body functions against the wishes of the person whose body it is, that is a disorder. Hosting an unwanted parasite is certainly a disorder. Ergo, pregnancy is a disease unless the woman's intent is to be pregnant. And the moment a third party inhibits the removal of that parasite and cure of the disease, that most certainly is oppression.

If this law goes into effect there would eventually be an institutionalized form of redress which would make it easier and easier to begin a complaint and on the flip side require a mountain of work for the company to defend itself, mostly against cases that would prve to be fruitless for the accuser.

Where did McCain say Jindal is the future of the Republican Party? Quite the opposite, Jindal is the past of humanity which, God willing, we're long past. Exorcisms & creationism, oh my! No amount of reforming instinct can redeem a mind stuck in the 17th century.

Based on the underlying fear I sensed from liberals over a Mccain Jindal ticket. I have concluded months ago, Jindal is the right man for the job. Mccain was absolutely right when he said Jindal is not only the future of the GOP party but he is america's future. To see the transformation and progress made in LA is to recognize the magnitude of the tremendous gridlock in the federal government of today...where the head dems and fighting with the head repubs. The fighting has lost its novelty...and I for once, I'm sick of the elementary bickering. Jindal is a man possess with a burning desire to reform and bring about real changes to his people of LA...and the results came about with immediate actions and not just words. As a fence straddler voter, I find myself seeing character and effectiveness in Jindal and for the sake of us all in this country..I do hope Jindal will be VP so that we may set a new standard on how effective leadership ought to be.

It's the same story with everyone I talk to: either you can't turn off the radiators (like me) or even if you do, the heat pipe or other system still makes it a good 87. Thermostats are available in nice buildings I can't afford :-). But in brownstones ,which most of the city lives in, it's the radiator bizness.

Steve,

You're still getting disease mixed up with natural functions of the body.

I'm not entirely sure I understand this. Isn't it possible to turn the individual radiators off if they get too hot?

Here in Europe, we even have these little things called thermostats which automatically turn the radiators on and off to maintain a certain temperature. Are such devices really unknown in Manhattan?
